✨ Thank you for taking an interest in being a mentor at Tech+! Maybe a past mentor inspired you to become a first-time mentor or the growth of your mentees invigorated you to continue as an experienced mentor. Mentor Values
Tech+ looks for the following values in its mentors:
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn, grow, and improve as a mentor
- Embody a "pay it forward" mindset
- Be passionate about supporting their mentee by providing resources and guidance
- Value the importance of individuality, diversity, and inclusion — respecting different opinions, interests, and passions — especially within the tech community at UW
- Be enthusiastic about being part of Tech+!
Commitment
- Commit ~2-4 hours per month to the Tech+ Mentorship Program
- Meet 1:1 once a month with their mentee (or more!)
A Tech+ Mentor Should...
- Be a UWaterloo student who has completed / is currently in their 2B term, or a UWaterloo graduate
- Seek opportunities for learning and growth through this experience
- Be humble about their own experiences and show gratitude to those who helped them get to where they are today
- Understand differences from varying unique perspectives, which make Tech+ a better organization 🤝
- Be passionate about helping mentees develop!
A Tech+ Mentor Should NOT...
- Require experience as a mentor. We acknowledge that mentors may not feel "prepared", and that is completely OK! Tech+ will provide support and resources for our mentors
- Complete homework or other assignments for/with their mentee. The Mentorship Program is designed to provide mentees with guidance and insight — mentors are NOT an "expendable resource"
- Provide assistance outside of their comfort zone or be a substitute for professional counseling
- If under any circumstance, a mentor does not feel comfortable in helping their mentee (eg. mental health, domestic disputes, etc.), Tech+ is committed to providing the necessary support and resources to our mentors.
- Mentors are NOT a substitute for professional counseling.
- Evaluate an individual's worth based on superficial attributes (career, academics, etc.)
Testimonials

Jack Lin (F20 Mentor)
Honestly got one of the most fulfilling experiences out of this program. Seeing my mentees be able to absorb and apply my tips and tricks to achieve their goals (e.g. better grades, acing interviews…etc.) was inexplicably satisfying. On top of all, being a part of the Tech+ community also taught me how to be a better mentor!

Bilal Akhter (F20 Mentor)
It was a great way to be able to assure my mentee and others that even though the world is uncertain and first year is scary, UW will likely still greatly propel their career and they’ll do well. Oh, and they shouldn’t forget to have fun!
